Day 5….

Monday, January 21st, 2008

We are still at Saint John’s. We had hopes of getting Allyson home today but an infection at the old site of her IV is keeping us here for a few more days :(

It seems like Allyson is one big chemistry experiment right now. Lisa and I are trying to understand all of the terminology and all of the different drugs Allyson is getting and is going to be getting; it is very overwhelming. We know that the next month is one of the most critical times in her treatment, and we have to do everything to try and keep her healthy during this time.

This morning was a good one. Allyson woke up and ate a whole cup of her soy peach yogurt. She did have to get one of here chemo drugs this morning which is a shot in her thigh. The doctors put a numbing cream on her leg about a half and hour before the shot and it makes the shot much easier for her. She did very good getting the shot. After all of the ‘fun’ we put Allyson in the wagon and went down to the Ronald McDonald room (she calls it the kitchen). This room is great! It is bright, has a large TV and is stocked with food and drink that is all donated. We are very thank to have some place to go and relax other than her room. The volunteers are wonderful. They bake cookies and bring special snacks. Today we are having “pigs in an blanket” while watching the football game. Allyson is of course watching the Backyardigans on her DVD player.

ALLyson…

Hello everyone. We thought we needed to make a post midweek to keep you up-to-date with what is happening with our family. Benjamin is doing very well. He’s toddling all over the place and has a total of six teeth now. He’s beginning to say a few words as well.

What’s with the title of this post? Well, it is difficult news to share with you all…This Tuesday, Allyson was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the bone marrow. This was devastating news for us that really came out of left field. It all started with a limp on Christmas Day. Since then we’ve been back and forth from various doctors. Finally, after a visit to the doc Monday afternoon, we thought she had a “toddler fracture” that an x-ray wasn’t able to pick up. She was scheduled for a bone scan on this Monday. We were hoping the scan would see the fracture. New blood work was also done. Her pediatrician called us Monday evening saying the limp combined with questionable blood work was cause for concern. She had her husband, a pediatric oncologist look at the blood work as well. Together they felt Allyson should have a bone marrow biopsy done because they were fearful it might be cancer. - To make a long story short, Allyson was finally diagnosed with leukemia on Tuesday.

She began chemotherapy treatment immediately and will continue for the next two and a half years. This first month will be the most difficult as the most aggressive treatment happens now. We are hopeful for a cure as her doctors say this kind of leukemia is treatable and highly curable. Her body was in good shape medically as we began treatment, and that was good news to hear. There is no cancer in her blood or spinal cord at this time either - also very good news.

We ask for your thoughts and prayers for Allyson and our family as we begin the long journey though her treatment. We have every confidence in her doctors that that they will provide proper treatment for her and she will be cured.

Keep checking for updates.

Happy First Birthday, Benjamin!!!

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Well, our baby turned one year old today! What a thrill for us to celebrate this special day with Benjamin. He’s been a part of our lives for just three months now…we can’t imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have him! - His birthmother has been on our minds today as we remember her and the precious gift she has given to our family. We wish her peace on this day and hope she knows in her heart that he is with a wonderful family that loves him to pieces.

Yesterday we invited our family and friends to Benjamin’s Tol, his first birthday party. Tol is an important celebration in the Korean culture. He did so well!! It is so nice to see how comfortable he is around our family and friends now. He no longer does the “stranger stare” with them and actually works the room. - We tried to incorporate Benjamin’s Korean culture into his birthday celebration. We began with a lunch catered by a local Chinese restaurant (Vince’s Asian Bistro). The owners, Vince and Anna did such a wonderful job. We enjoyed a delicious meal that included a mix of Korean and Chinese food. Anna made rice cakes especially for the party as they are a traditional “sweet” eaten at a Tol. She also sent along other Korean treats as well as beautiful oranges to create a lovely fruit display, also a Korean tradition.

After lunch, we dressed Benjamin in his hanbok which was given to him by his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hong. (Check out our photo page to see pictures.) Once he was dressed, we began the Toljabee. This is a traditional event in the Korean culture during a Tol celebration. Various items were placed around a table in order to attact Ben’s attention. The first three items he picked are said to predict his future. Each item we placed on the table was of personal importance to us…the music CD was given to Benjamin by a family named the Kelly’s (special friends of ours from New Orleans); the money was given to Benjamin by Brad’s MawMaw and PawPaw; the book was one we bought while we were in Korea; the needle and thread came from my mother’s sewing kit; the ruler was from my scrapbooking supplies; the digital camera is Allyson’s, placed on the table to honor the talent of Benjamin’s birthmother as a photographer. Ok, the rice came from the local grocery store so I guess there’s no personal importance placed on that one;-). Brad led Benjamin to the Toljabee table…we all waited with anticipation to see what he’d pick first. Right away, he picked up the CD (a music lover like his daddy) which means he’ll be musical. Next, he picked up the bag of rice (smart boy)…that means he’ll be a rich man some day (hopefully rich in many aspects of his life). Finally, it appeared as though he was going for the money, but it only stuck to his hand. No, he wanted the digital camera (kind of neat since his birthmother is a photographer). - It was really fun to see what he’d grab. Only time will tell if these predictions hold true.

Benjamin then opened his many gifts with the help of his daddy. The Hong’s gave Brad and I a gold ring as a gift for Benjamin’s Tol. It is an absolutely beautiful ring, and we were thrilled to show this special gift to our family and friends. We are certain Benjamin will treasure it when he is older.

Finally, we ate cake! Of course the “monkey man” needed a monkey cake! He loved it! We sliced off one of the monkey ears and put it on his tray. He poked at it at first but then dug right in! Cake and icing were smeared all over his face and his highchair!

We were so happy to celebrate this day with our son and so thankful to have such wonderful family and friends join us.

Happy Birthday little guy!!!

Happy New Year!

Monday, January 7th, 2008

After a quick break we are back for another year of blogging, photos, and movies about us.

We had a very nice Christmas and New Years. Allyson and Daddy got to fly on an airplane to go and visit Nana and Gramps and Dude and Bumpy in New Orleans. The weather was great and we had a great time with everyone. Benjamin and Mommy stayed at home this time but we will all be heading back to New Orleans over the summer.

Benjamin has become a walker, right before Christmas he was taking a few steps at a time but now he is running all over the place. He likes to follow Allyson all over the house.

Enjoy the new pictures.
